Paraffin provide a firmly established and traditional method by which to convert darkness into light. They have served their purpose over a hundred years in a vast variety of environments and deliver reliable, bright and economic illumination. At this point, we must emphasise the importance of studying the User´s Instructions diligently (particularly those with mantles, such as 500 HK). On no account should aromatic paraffin be used - it blocks the jets. It is also advisable to make several practice ignitions at home before setting out on a trip where the lamp will be first used. The `wick´ models, like `Feuerhand´, present less of a problem and make no noise (and less light!). However, they are not as bright. Paraffin lanterns have several advantages: economic, bright light without electricity, easy to maintain with always available spares, traditional style, romantic atmosphere and simply good looking.
